How to make 2020 the most non toxic for you and the planet

It’s a month into 2020, maybe you’ve stuck to your resolutions, maybe you’re still trying to start them. Either way, we’re rooting for your best self, whatever that looks like at the moment.

At Non Toxic Revolution, we strive to avoid harmful products for our health and by doing that we find that many of the same choices are more positively aligned with being healthy for the planet. Climate change is on the brain big time these days, and this year we’re making a resolution to create the connection between environmental exposures for our health and the health of the planet.

In recent years, it’s become increasingly clear just why we should make these adjustments in our lives, but the question remains: how do you know what to actually do?

Waste is a good place to start! Generally speaking, items that are disposable and derived from plastic are definitely not good for the planet, and often not good for our health either.

It’s always smart to do some research before diving headfirst into anything, especially when it has to do with your everyday life, so get creative! You can start by looking up or following social media influencers who are using their platforms to educate the public on zero waste lifestyles. Next, be sure to use the internet to your advantage! Google can be an incredible asset and searching for something as simple as “eco-friendly changes to make” will kick your journey off on a good note.

First things first, we’ve compiled some top tips for anyone looking to transition to a more eco-friendly life for you and the planet. Read on to discover some environmentally conscious brands, ways to cut water use and replacements for common everyday items.

Switch the brands you use

One of the first, fairly easy, changes you can make is to be aware of the brands you’re using and switch to ones that support your new lifestyle if necessary. Here are three forward-thinking brands that are ahead of the eco-friendly curve to spark your inspiration!

Aether Beauty

Aether Beauty is one brand setting itself apart from others. Aether’s ethical beauty products include amazing highlighters, eyeshadows, and more! These products are not only good for the environment, but they also offer the vegan and recyclable options we’ve all been searching for. Plus – the company boasts the world’s first zero waste eyeshadow palette.

Scout by Warby Parker

Unfortunately, we can’t help it if we have less than perfect vision. What we can do, however, is look for alternatives to our eyewear. Warby Parker has been a leader in the eyeglasses and sunglasses world for some time, but the company recently released sustainable daily contact lenses. With almost 80% less packaging than other contact blister packs, it’s a choice we can feel comfortable making.

Pela Phone Cases

Did you know that over 60,000 plastic phone cases are thrown away each year? One company, Pela Case, offers 100% compostable phone cases for iPhone, Google and Samsung phones. All you need to do is select your phone model, choose a case and you’re good to go!

Limit your water use

According to the EPA, the average American uses over 300 gallons of water per day. Though many people, especially in North America, are lucky to have access to water, many go without. Plus, states like California are experiencing droughts and suffering through water crises. To easily reduce the amount of water you’re using daily, try taking shorter showers, turning the water off while doing dishes and fixing any leaks your faucet or showerhead may have.

Adopting a vegan diet or cutting down on meat in your daily diet can go gallons and gallons towards conserving water for the planet and your health.

Be more conscious of everyday items

When making choices for your everyday items, try to opt for things that can be reused! There are several ways you can do this without it seeming overbearing, especially in the beginning of your journey. And you’re also decreasing your exposure to chemicals added to disposable containers. It’s a win-win!

An easy one you can start with is choosing cloth over going through roll after roll of paper towels. From cleaning up small messes to napkins with dinner, cloth can be rewashed while paper towels are thrown in the trash after just one use.

If you’re someone who loves a good cup of coffee, a simple way you can help the planet is bringing your own mug or cup to your favorite cafe rather than getting a plastic cup each time. 16 billion plastic coffee cups are thrown away each year, so every day counts. If you choose a container like Klean Kanteen, you can chug your cold or warm drink of choice with ease knowing the lining is non toxic and you’re limiting your exposure to plastic drink containers, which can contain carcinogens.

Another great swap you can start with right off the bat is to use reusable grocery bags rather than plastic. Many grocery stores sell them right in the store and have initiatives to stop providing plastic bags in the coming years, so starting a little early shouldn’t be too big of a haul.

Though becoming entirely zero-waste or completely non toxic overnight is a big ask, these are some easy adjustments you can make as we head into the rest of 2020. When you feel comfortable implementing these into your daily routine, take it a step further.

By the end of the year, you’ll be your own eco-friendly lifestyle inspo!
