For many adults Cinco De Mayo is a time to celebrate and traditionally many celebrate with a pitcher of margaritas among friends. Although we know that consumption of alcohol has been linked to cancer, we also understand that people (over 21 of course) do drink so we are here to encourage you to drink organic, and in moderation.
Now you wouldn’t always think to request a organic margarita, but tequila is made from the agave plant – A plant that takes 10 years before it is ready to be used in the making of tequila. Contrast that to the growing time of 6–12 months of other types of materials such as wheat, barley, or sugarcane that is used to make other spirits and it’s a no-brainer. Why? Because if you don’t grow agave organically, you’ve drinking something that has been exposed to at least 10 years of pesticides and chemicals.
2 oz organic tequila
juice of 1 lime, freshly squeezed
1-2 tablespoons of agave nectar or homemade sweet and sour (depending on how sweet you like it See Below for recipe)
Kosher or Sea Salt if you prefer a salt rim. (I do)
Extra lime wedge to rim and garnish each cup
After shaking all ingredients but the salt over ice, set aside and rim a glass with a lime wedge that has been sliced in the middle. Dip your cup in a shallow plate of salt. Add ice, and add your margarita. Garnish with your lime wedge!
Homemade Sweet and Sour Mix For Those Who Must.
Next lets discuss Sweet and Sour mix. I suggest nix-ing it all together, or if you are one of those that MUST drink a super sweet margarita make it from scratch. It’s super easy and you will be taking out the sodium benzoate, sodium citrate, polysorbate 60, potassium sorbate, FD&C yellow #5 that is in a typical store bought bottle.
Combine 1 cup organic sugar with 1 cup water until sugar is completely dissolved. Add 1 cup fresh lime juice and 1 cup fresh lemon juice and refrigerate. You have a sweet and sour mix that will last up to a week!
